Full of mystery and legend, Guanajuato is located in a basin of the Sierra Madre mountains, with much of its perimeter creeping upwards along the walls of the valley. This former mining city was once home to José Carpio, a young and talented man known as El Cantador whose singing and guitar-playing earned him fame in the 18th century. The Hotel Indigo Guanajuato pays homage to the city´s mining heritage and its legendary musician. In fact, it shares the same ground El Cantador once called home. After his father was killed in a mining accident, the young musician began mining himself—all the while moonlighting with his guitar. When he saved enough money to buy a plot of land, he chose the land where Hotel Indigo now stands. And from its terrace, guests can still see the beautiful garden named in his honor.
